Full Mouth Reconstruction Recovery
Do you have decayed or damaged teeth? What about missing teeth? Gingivitis? Patients with multiple or ongoing oral health issues can take advantage of full mouth reconstruction at our Harrisburg, PA practice. This treatment combines two or more restorative dentistry procedures to improve the health of your smile.
Because each treatment plan is catered to the needs of the individual, every full mouth reconstruction will be different. Therefore, healing times can vary considerably. Today, our team at Silvers Family Dental will explore some of the most common treatments performed during this process and explain full mouth reconstruction recovery in a little more detail.
Recovery after Custom Restorations
Custom restorations are commonly used in full mouth reconstruction treatment plans. These can include dental fillings, crowns, bridges, inlays, and onlays.
While fillings can be placed in a single appointment, crowns, bridges, and other restorations may take two visits. After the initial placement, patients may feel slight tenderness around the new restoration. However, these side effects can be mitigated with over-the-counter pain relievers. In most cases, patients are comfortable within two to three days.
Recovery after Root Canal Therapy
Root canal therapy is necessary whenever bacteria infect the pulp, the soft tissues that reside in the root canals of the tooth. Root canal infections cause pain, swelling, and inflammation.
To eliminate the infection at its source, the pulp tissues are removed from the tooth. The canals and pulp chamber are then filled, and the tooth is sealed. In some cases, patients may need to return for a second appointment to have a crown placed.
Root canal therapy has an unfortunate reputation of being painful. However, most patients feel minimal pain during and after treatment. As with fillings, crowns, and bridges, slight gingival tenderness may be present, but should subside within a few days.
Recovery after Dentures
Dentures are an effective and affordable way to restore a full arch of teeth. Denture placement alone usually only takes a couple of appointments and can be completed in one to two weeks.
However, if extractions must be performed prior to denture placement, it can add some time to your treatment timeline. Keep in mind, however, that dentures typically require adjustments once placed. This will allow your doctor to provide a proper fit.
Recovery after Dental Implants
Out of all the restorative treatments we offer at our practice, dental implants require the longest recovery period. This is because the implant posts must integrate with the natural bone tissue.
This process, called osseointegration, usually takes between three to six months on average. Once the implants have fully healed, your final restoration can be placed.
Recovery after Periodontal Care
Before pursuing any type of restorative work, it is important to make sure you do not have gum disease. If symptoms of gingivitis or periodontitis are present, we will recommend appropriate treatments to reduce bacteria levels in the mouth.
Generally, patients with mild gum disease can remedy the issue quickly with a deep dental cleaning. Advanced periodontal disease usually requires surgery. If this is the case, a few months of healing will be added to your treatment timeline.
